Titanium dioxide pigment is a fine white powder, is the most widely used white pigment because of its brightness and very high refractive index, in which it is surpassed only by a few other materials. TiO2 is also an effective opacifier in powder form.
The most important application areas are paints and varnishes as well as paper and plastics: They process about 80% of our titanium dioxide consumption. Other pigment applications like printing inks, fibers, rubber, cosmetic products account for another 20%.
Titanium dioxide white pigments are developments of the 20th century, and because of their high hiding power, low toxicity and reasonable cost, they have eclipsed other traditional white pigments.
